The Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater is a progressive art venue located inside Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. The logotype derived from early typewriter fonts is placed inside an inverted spotlight to convey the idea of subversive theater. CalArts illustrator Frank Terry draws the mascot of Redcat–a red cat. Multiple versions of the drawing are created, from complex to simple. Working with the architect, signage is developed that includes a custom typeface and the cat chasing yarn of neon over the main entrance.
